Leonardo di Giugno

.
Born: about 1792 ~Serradifalco, Caltanisetta, Sicilia
Died: 30 December 1833 ~Serradifalco, Caltanisetta, Sicilia

Meaning of di Giugno [dee-JOON-yu]: of or born in the month of June

Civil birth records were not made in Sicily before 1820, and I've been unable to find the 1789 church baptism record or the 1820 marriage record of my great-great grandfather Leonardo di Giugno.  His birth year is estimated from his age given on various documents including his death record and the birth records of his children.  Leonardo's occupation is given as contadino (peasant sharecropper).   He was born during the reign of the King of the Two Sicilies, Ferdinando I (also known as Ferdinando III and IV!!), who in turn was a subject of his father King Carlos III of Spain and All its Holdings (including Sicily).

In 1789, on February 4, George Washington was unanimously elected the first President of the United States by the Electoral College.    The first national Thanksgiving Day, recommended by President Washington and approved by Congress, was observed on observed November 26, 1789.

Leonardo died in 1833, just two years after the marriage of his daughter Angela di Giugno, my great-grandmother.    In 1833, the King of the Two Sicilies was the grandson of Ferdinando I, the monarch who ruled when Leonard was born.  This grandson was also a Ferdinando, called Ferdinando II.
In the United States in 1833, in June, Andrew Jackson became the first President to ride a train. In August, the city of Chicago was founded.
