Salvatore Bellanca
Born: 15 Oct 1855 ~Mussomeli, Caltanissetta, Kingdom of the Two Sicilies
Married: 21 September 186 April 1879 ~ Mussomeli, Caltanissetta, Sicily, Kingdom of Italy

Died: ? ~ Grotte, Agrigento, Sicily

Meaning of Bellanca (bell-AHN-kuh): from "blanca", white;
OR: from "bell'anca", beautiful hip

        From about 1820 through 1860, civil birth records in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies reported the details of all births on the left side of a two-page form, reproduced below.  The right side of the record refers to Salvatore's baptism.  It is not a baptism certificate.  It names no priest or godparents, but simply states that the birth was reported to the church and the church confirmed that the child had been baptized.
       The two pages on the left are from microfilmed images filmed by the Mormon church from the Caltanissetta provincial archives, which received a hand copy of the original record in 1855.  On the right is an image that I photographed in 2006, of the birth record still held in the Registro degli Atti di Nascita (Civil Birth Register) of the municipio (town hall) of Mussomeli.  The town's record has 'margin notes' written by a town clerk sometime after the 1855 date of the birth record.  These notes were evidently either not sent to the province, or if received, not recorded by the province.
       The transcription and translation following the images of the records are from the town's copy including the margin notes.  Page two of the records were essentially the same in both the town's and the province's copies.  Although page one of each copy appears identical with the exception of the margin notes, close inspection will reveal slight differences in the handwritten words.  The transcription and translation are compressed to one page for brevity and the margin notes are shown in red.

       Salvatore Bellanca and  Giuseppa Sforza were married in a civil ceremony in Mussomeli's Town Hall on Sunday, 6 April 1879, with Councilman Salvatore Mistretta officiating.  I haven't located the record of their church marriage, but they likely were married in church within a day before or after their civil ceremony.
