A model of a sulfur mine and a photo from about 1890.  The pickmen chopped the sulfur out of the tunnel walls, and the 'carusi' carried it out.  The carusi were taken from their families for a 'death benefit'.  They were carusi for life, from age six until forty or fifty, or death.  They worked virtually nude because of the heat of the mine, and ate and slept in the mine.
